Kalashtami, also known as Kal Bhairav Jayanti or Bhairav Ashtami, is considered the day of the manifestation of Kal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. There is an ancient legend associated with the appearance of Kal Bhairav. It is said that once Lord Vishnu and Lord Brahma had a dispute about who was superior, and both claimed to be the creator of the other. At that moment, a pillar of fire appeared, and it was declared that whoever could find the beginning or end of this pillar would be considered superior. Lord Brahma, in the form of a swan, tried to find the top of the pillar, while Lord Vishnu, in the form of a boar, tried to find its origin. Lord Vishnu admitted that he could not find the end of the pillar, but Lord Brahma lied, claiming that he had found the top. Then, from that pillar, Sadashiva appeared in human form and, angered by Brahma’s lie, cursed him that he would never be worshipped.

The temple of Lord Kaal Bhairav is located in the city of Ujjain in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh. Kaal Bhairav is known as the protector of the city of Ujjain, and this temple is dedicated to Him. Lord Kaal Bhairav is worshipped here in His Vaishnav form. It is believed that the temple was originally built by King Bhadrasen, and it is also mentioned in the Avanti Khand of the Skanda Purana. During the Parmar dynasty (9th to 13th century), idols of Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Lord Vishnu, and Lord Ganesha were found at this site. Later, the temple was renovated during the reign of King Bhoj.
