Varanasi is revered as the sacred city of Lord Shiva, and its spiritual tradition is also deeply connected with the worship of Shakti. Kashi is home to several ancient temples dedicated to different forms of the Goddess. Shri Navdurga Temple holds a distinctive place in this tradition, as devotees believe that the nine forms of Maa Durga are present here together in a single sacred form.
The temple is associated with several traditional beliefs. According to local tradition, the Goddess here is considered Swayambhu, rather than a deity installed by human hands. Another popular tradition holds that when temples in Kashi were being destroyed during the reign of Aurangzeb, this ancient shrine remained untouched.
The nine forms worshipped here are Maa Shailputri, Brahmacharini, Chandraghanta, Kushmanda, Skandamata, Katyayani, Kalaratri, Mahagauri and Siddhidatri.
