The famous Shani Dev temple known as Kokilavan Dham is located in Kosi Kalan near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, India. This temple is situated in dense forests. This is why it is named Kokilavan (Cuckoo Forest). It is a very ancient temple of Lord Shani and his guru Barkhandi Baba. Devotees from all over India come here to worship.
Why Kokilavan Shani Temple is called Siddha (Accomplished):
In the Dwapara era, Lord Shani performed rigorous penance to please Lord Sri Krishna. Pleased with his penance, Sri Krishna appeared to Shani Dev in the form of a cuckoo. Sri Krishna said that Kokilavan adjacent to Nandgaon is his forest. Anyone who worships Lord Shani and circumambulates this forest receives the blessings of both him and Lord Shani. This is why Kokilavan Shani temple has the status of a Siddha temple. Besides temples, there are also two ancient lakes and a cow shelter located here. Lakhs of devotees come to Kokilavan Dham every Saturday. These devotees circumambulate while chanting “Om Sham Shanaishcharaya Namah” and “Jai Shani Dev.” People also donate to the needy on this path.
The Story of Kokilavan and Lord Shani:
According to mythological stories, Lord Shani performed rigorous penance to see his beloved deity Lord Sri Krishna. Pleased with his penance, Sri Krishna appeared to him in the form of a cuckoo. The forest where Sri Krishna gave darshan to Lord Shani is known as Kokilavan (Cuckoo Forest). When Sri Krishna was born in Brajmandal, all gods and goddesses came for his darshan. Among them, Lord Shani was also present. But Mother Yashoda did not allow him to see Sri Krishna. She feared that Lord Shani’s crooked gaze might fall on Sri Krishna.
Lord Shani became very disappointed by this and went to a forest near Nandgaon to perform penance. Pleased with his penance, Sri Krishna appeared to Lord Shani. Sri Krishna told Lord Shani to always reside at this place. Since Sri Krishna appeared to Lord Shani in the form of a cuckoo, this forest is known as Kokilavan (Cuckoo Forest).
