When Lord Vishnu severed his head with the Sudarshan Chakra, his head became immortal and came to be known as Rahu. It is believed that the place where Rahu’s head fell is today’s sacred Rahu Paithani region. This is why the temple is considered highly powerful and spiritually significant for Rahu Shanti and Rahu Dosh Nivaran.
In this special ritual, a sacred sankalp will be taken in the devotee’s name and gotra, followed by 18,000 Rahu Mool Mantra Jaap and Dashansh Havan. The Rahu Temple located in Paithani village of Pauri is the only temple of Rahu where people come throughout the year to worship Rahu along with Lord Shiva. In this temple, devotees offer moong khichdi to Rahu as prasad. According to local people, it is believed that Adi Shankaracharya built this temple. When he came to this place, he felt the influence of Rahu in this area of Paithani village in Pauri. After this, he began the construction of the Rahu Temple in Paithani village.
In the Kedar Khand of the Skanda Purana, it is mentioned that at the confluence of Rath Vahini and Nawalika rivers, in the foothills of the Rashtrakoot mountains, Rahu performed intense penance of Lord Shiva, which led to the establishment of this temple. This place is called Rathakshetra, named after the Rashtrakoot mountains. Also, because Rahu’s gotra was “Paithinasi,” the village later came to be known as Paithani.
