The Gajalakshmi Temple in Ujjain is around two thousand years old and is also mentioned in the Skanda Purana. The form of Maa Lakshmi here is very unique. It is the form of Gajalakshmi, where the Goddess is seated in padmasana posture riding the elephant Airavat. Usually, Maa Lakshmi’s vehicle is considered an owl, but this temple is an exception. This rare idol is made of crystal and beautifully carved from a single stone. The idol is about five feet tall and is believed to be from the time of Emperor Vikramaditya.
