Located amidst the Himalayas in the Mustang region of Nepal at an altitude of approximately 3,800 metres, Muktinath Temple is a sacred pilgrimage site dedicated to Lord Vishnu. It is known as the Mukti Kshetra because Lord Vishnu is believed to grant liberation from sins, worldly attachments, and the cycle of birth and death. The Shaligram stones found in the Kali Gandaki River are revered in the Vaishnava tradition as manifestations of Lord Vishnu. The 108 sacred water spouts located near the temple are regarded as symbols of spiritual purification, cleansing, and surrender. Revered in both Hindu and Buddhist traditions, Muktinath is an ancient and unique spiritual pilgrimage site.
The significance of Muktinath becomes even greater during Pitru Paksha. Lord Vishnu is associated with liberation and the attainment of a higher spiritual state, while the purpose of Pitru rituals is to pray for the satisfaction, peace, and well-being of one’s ancestors.
