In India, near Mathura in Uttar Pradesh, a famous Shani Dev temple is located in Kosikalan, known as Kokilavan Dham. According to mythological stories, in Dwapar Yuga, Shani Dev performed intense penance to have darshan of his beloved deity, Lord Shri Krishna. Pleased by his penance, Shri Krishna appeared before him in the form of a cuckoo (koel). It is said that when Lord Krishna was born in Braj, all the gods came to see him, including Shani Dev. But Mother Yashoda did not allow Shani Dev to see Krishna, fearing his powerful gaze might affect the child. Disappointed, Shani Dev went to a forest near Nandgaon and began deep penance. Pleased with this, Lord Krishna appeared to him in the form of a cuckoo in that forest, which is why the place is called Kokilavan. Lord Krishna then told Shani Dev to reside there forever and blessed that whoever worships Shani Dev and performs parikrama of this forest will receive blessings from both Krishna and Shani Dev. This is why the Shani Dev temple at Kokilavan is considered a siddh temple.
