The Navami Tithi of Pitru Paksha is specially observed as Matru Navami. In religious tradition, this Tithi is considered especially significant for remembering departed female ancestors of the family—such as one’s mother, grandmother, maternal grandmother and other departed women of the lineage—and performing Shraddh in their honour.
On this day, Pind Daan, Shraddh and Tarpan are performed with prayers for their satisfaction, peace and salvation. Matru Navami offers a special opportunity to express gratitude and reverence towards the maternal ancestors whose love, values and blessings continue to nurture the family and lineage.
