The final Amavasya of Pitru Paksha is known as Sarva Pitru or Mahalaya Amavasya. This Tithi is considered especially significant for remembering all known and unknown ancestors and performing Pitru Karma in their honour. According to religious tradition, Shraddh and Tarpan may also be performed on this day for ancestors whose exact Tithi of passing is unknown or for whom Shraddh could not be performed on their designated Tithi. Therefore, prayers are offered on this sacred day for the satisfaction and peace of the entire ancestral lineage.
