Lord Vishnu attempted to find its base, while Lord Brahma set out to discover its summit. However, neither of them could reach the limits of the endless pillar.
Through this divine manifestation, Lord Shiva revealed His infinite and supreme nature. It is believed that this eternal pillar of fire later manifested as the sacred Arunachala Hill. For this reason, Arunachalam is revered as the sacred abode of Lord Shiva’s eternal divine light. Despite this, Lord Brahma falsely claimed that he had reached the top. Lord Shiva then revealed Himself as a blazing pillar of divine light whose radiance shook the entire universe.
After the deities sought His forgiveness, Lord Shiva established Himself as Lord Arunachaleshwara at the sacred Arunachala Hill. This holy hill is considered one of the most revered manifestations of Lord Shiva. Arunachalam is also associated with Karthigai Maha Deepam, during which a sacred flame is illuminated as a symbol of divine light triumphing over darkness and negativity. Devotees believe that worshipping at this sacred site and participating in spiritual rituals purifies the soul, promotes spiritual growth, brings inner peace, and helps reduce the burden of past karmas.
